Natural Bug Spray

When traveling through Central America, an absolute essential is sun screen. But a close second: bug spray. We both always carry a bottle with us everywhere we go. We refused buying a chemical-loaded one from the drug store and were super excited when we found a natural alternative.

Apple Cider Vinegar, Rosemary and Lavender oil act bug repellent. The coconut oil even has a nice moisturizing effect on the skin.

Ingredients: (makes 250ml)

  • 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/3 cup coconut oil
  • 1/3 cup distilled water
  • 5 branches of rosemary
  • up to 60 drops essential oil (lavender, citron, tea tree..)

Bring water to a boil, add rosemary and let simmer for about 20 minutes.

Set aside and let allow to cool down completely. You want to avoid that the oils evaporate, so make sure to cover it with a closely fitting lid.

Strain into a spray bottle, add coconut oil, apple cider vinegar and essential oil.

Shake well before use.

Edit: We can vouch for this bug repellent spray. We used it during our travels and had no problems with bugs. Even when we spend some nights in the jungle. At first the smell seems quite strong, but after a few moments you can’t even tell you applied it. You don’t want to use it on wounds or freshly shaved legs – it hurts. I can tell you.
