Easy Moisturizing Lotion Bars For Smooth Skin

Lately I found myself wondering how to pronounce all the ingredients beauty products contain. Parafinnum liquidum, PEG-150, methylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben, isobutylparaben – naming just a few common ingrdients in body lotions. When I realized that I basically put a huge amount of chemicals on my body, the decision was made to create my own beauty remedies.

The skin is our biggest organ, absorbing all the substances we put on it. So, by changing your daily conventional body lotion for a natural one can make a huge difference in your overall health.

As I always struggled with dry skin, I felt that starting with making lotion bars would be a good idea. If your skin is somewhat like mine you want to make sure to keep it well moisturized. Coconut Oil has an extremely moisturizing effect on the skin, so I decided to make it the basis of my lotion bars. Normally I just use pure organic coconut oil to moisturize my skin after showering. But sometimes I just can’t wait for the oil to sink in or don’t want to carry a huge jar of coconut oil with me. When I am traveling I pack a handy lotion bar and am good to go. They are also really useful when flying, as you can easily put them in your hand luggage (as they are not liquid).

Start with coconut oil and combine it with beeswax to make sure your bar remains solid. To add a nice smell to them just mix in some essential oils. I made two batches, using lavender oil in one and a mix of vanilla oil and rose water in the other – and they turned out wonderful, moisturizing my dry skin and keeping it smooth for hours.

I love to put on the lavender lotion right before going to bed, because lavender oil supports sleep. It also has a positive and calming effect on the psyche.

Ingredients: (makes 250 ml)

  • ¼ cup beeswax
  • ¾ cup coconut oil
  • 15-20 drops essential oil (lavender, rose, vanilla or your favorite oil)

Using a double boiler or a glass jar nested in a pot of boiling water, melt coconut oil and beeswax together. Once they have melted completely, you may add any essential oils if using. Pour the mixture in a silicone form (ice cube trays also work well) and let it allow to cool completely before removing.

Store the lotion bars in a dry and cool place, as Coconut Oil gets liquid when temperature rises above 25°C. I like to keep one in my fridge using it on warmer days, which has an amazing cooling effect.
